Why Physio After Surgery Isn't Optional — It's Essential
Every week at Innovation Physio, we see a variety of surgeries come through and work with patients recovering from these. These are some of the most typical that we treat — but this isn’t an exhaustive list.
The following are often seen when patients neglect to do post-operative physiotherapy or delay it:
✔ Scar tissue that develops to the extent that it impedes movement.
✔ Rapidly atrophying muscles
✔ Unstable or ‘not quite right’ joints
✔ Persistent pain that persists for much longer than it should
✔ Slow and painful return to normal life
Conversely, those who begin a well-designed rehab program at the correct time — with the appropriate assistance from healthcare professionals — are able to recover more quickly, in less pain and with better outcomes. The research supports this, as do we.
Post surgery physio isn’t about going through pain. It’s a matter of working smart at the appropriate pace and in a manner customized to you.
Surgeries We Help You Recover From
At Innovation Physio, we work with patients recovering from a wide range of surgeries every week. Here are the most common ones we treat — though this list is far from exhaustive.
• Knee Surgery Rehabilitation: There is a progressive rehabilitation program for all types of knee surgery (e.g. TKA, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair). Be patient – you may experience delays if you rush. Move too slowly or stiffness will result.
We take you through all stages from beginning movement to prevent stiffness, to strengthening the joint in a progressive way, and then to functional training to help you get back on your feet to walk, drive, climb stairs and more. One of our most frequent referrals is post knee replacement physio and we have all the skills necessary to ensure it is progressed safely.
• Hip Surgery Physiotherapy: The aim of a hip replacement or hip arthroscopy is to restore a normal gait, hip strength and to protect the new hip joint during everyday activities. We spend the time with this one — because a lifetime of difference is made with a hip rehab right.
• Shoulder Surgery Recovery: When it comes to healing, rotator cuff repairs and shoulder stabilisation surgeries are known to take a long time and with the proper rehab plan, recovery is a 100% possibility. We begin with pain free movement and gradually progress from pain-free, through strengthening of the rotator cuffs and up to whatever your shoulder demands of you, whether that be throwing a ball or lifting at work.
• Spinal Surgery Rehabilitation: After disc surgery, spinal fusion or decompression, it is all about learning how to move safely. We work on core stability, postural retraining and we don’t rush back! — the spine is not a forgiving beast!
• Other Surgeries We Support:
✔ ️ Ankle ligament reconstruction
✔ ️ Surgery of the foot or toes.
✔ ️ Wrist, hand, and carpal tunnel release
✔ ️ Give systematic instruction to abdominal surgery (breathing, posture, mobility)
✔ ️ Any other post-operative rehab needs
Do not know if we can assist with your particular surgery? Just call us. If we cannot help, we will point you in the direction of where to seek assistance.
How We Approach Your Recovery — Step by Step
Each patient is unique. Each surgical procedure is unique. This is why we don’t give you a plain exercise sheet and send you on your way! Here’s what it’s like to work with us:
Step 1 — Getting to Know You and Your Surgery
Your first appointment is all about listening. Dushyant will review your surgery history, readings of any reports/surgeon notes, your current movement and strength, and importantly, what your life was like prior to surgery and what you want it to be like after. He then creates a recovery plan based on your goals and not a template.
Step 2 — Early Recovery (Weeks 1–4)
The first priority is to tame it immediately after surgery. Minimizing swelling, preventing damage to healing tissue, maintaining some mobility to prevent stiffness, and preventing muscle wasting to begin with. This stage includes manual therapy and soft tissue techniques done manually and specific exercises that are not daunting but achievable.
Step 3 — Building Strength and Stability (Weeks 4–12)
When initial healing is complete, it’s time to load up — but carefully and gradually. This is where your body begins to re-learn to trust the repaired area and where real strength begins to be restored and balance re-trained. This is one of the most rewarding because many patients come to notice a considerable improvement during this stage.
Step 4 — Getting Back to Your Life
The last part is about real life function. Are the conditions conducive to returning to work? Return to Sport? Keep up with your garden? Share in their play with your grandkids? That’s what we’re shooting for — until you feel like you’re doing something you can do and feel good about doing it.
