Function Capacity Assessment Dandenong
Function Capacity Assessment Dandenong : Know Exactly What Your Body Can Do
You’ve no doubt come across the term Function Capacity Assessment Dandenong if you’ve been injured at work, are going through a TAC claim or you’ve had your employer request evidence of your physical fitness for a particular job. It may sound clinical — a little scary — but it doesn’t have to be.
APA-titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, Dushyant Singh Pundir, at Innovation Physio, Dandenong South, provides detailed, evidence-based functional capacity assessments, providing a clear and objective picture to employers, insurers, and people of what they can do (physically) at this time.
If you have an FCA for WorkCover or a work-related injury, a TAC claim, need NDIS plan support, a pre-employment medical or just peace of mind before going back to a physically demanding work role, here’s what to expect.
What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A functional capacity assessment is a physiotherapist-led structured test to Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) of a person, and is used to assess a person’s ability to carry out various physical tasks, including lifting, bending, reaching, gripping, standing, carrying and others.
An FCA is an objective, standardised consultation, unlike a general physio consultation. It is not about what people say how they feel, it’s about what they do during controlled testing. This is precisely why they are requested by insurers, employers, WorkCover agents and legal representatives because the results can be relied upon as factual and documented evidence, not an opinion.
All functional capacity evaluation at our Dandenong South physiotherapy clinic are performed by a physiotherapist who has worked overseas and in Australia for 15+ years of clinical experience and therefore the results are clinically valid and defensible should it be read by a case manager, doctor or lawyers.
Who Needs a Function Capacity Assessment Dandenong?
We regularly conduct individual and corporate Work Capacity Assessments for people and companies all over Dandenong South and the South-East Melbourne corridor, such as:
✔ Injured workers who are returning to work, or are evaluated for appropriate alternate employment after being work injury
✔ Employers who require a pre-employment functional assessment prior to offering a position to someone that involves a physically demanding task.
✔ Clients who need a TAC functional capacity assessment where this is a part of an existing claim.
✔ A functional capacity evaluation is required for plan support or plan review for NDIS participants who require this information.
✔ Insurers and case managers who require an independent physical demands analysis to help make an insurance decision.
✔ Individuals recovering from surgery who are seeking guidance on their own limits prior to returning to work or sport – use our pre & post surgery rehab and sport injury services.
If you are in any of these categories, a return to work assessment at our clinic provides you (or your organisation) with a clear, written report, and eliminates the guesswork on what to do next.
What Happens During Your Assessment?
Going to an evaluation can be a bit like going to an exam. Here’s what to expect, so there’s no egg on your face on the day.
1. Initial Consultation and History Review During the initial consultation and review of your medical history, Dushyant will review your injury history, current (or potential) job description, GP, specialist and/or case manager reports.
2. Musculoskeletal Screening It is important to have a baseline assessment of your joint range of motion, muscle strength and any pain that restricts your movement before starting any physical testing, so we do this first and see you are safe.
3. Function-Specific Testing This is the most important aspect of the FCE. Testing may involve any of the following, depending on the physical nature of a job:
✔ Strength to lift and carry (from floor to waist and waist to shoulder)
✔ To comfort people and encourage them to accept others.
✔ Standing, sitting and walking tolerance over time
✔ Bending, kneeling, crouching and reaching upwards
✔ Understanding, fine movement skills
✔ Balance and postural control
4. Cardiovascular and Fatigue Monitoring For jobs that require high amounts of physical exertion over a long period of time, we monitor your heart rate and recovery – to ensure that the assessment is as accurate as possible of your stamina – not stamina you could muster in one single effort.
5. Report Preparation At the end of the testing process, a comprehensive, professional report is provided that details your functional capacities, your current limitations and your clear recommendations – all written in a way that HR departments, insurers and lawyers can quickly and immediately act on without having to chase more clarification.
The length of assessments is typically 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the role or claim being assessed.

Functional Capacity Assessment vs. a Standard Physio Consultation
One common misconception: FCA is not a normal physiotherapy visit. A typical musculoskeletal physiotherapy session is treatment oriented and pain management. A functional capacity assessment, on the other hand, is a formal and objective assessment designed to generate a report for a third party, such as an employer, an insurance company or a legal entity. It’s assessment-based, not treatment based, and we’re always glad to talk to you about the rehab options you can continue with after the assessment.
